Movie Review : The Jungle Book
The real star of the film (meaning no offence too the film's only human actor), is Shere Khan. The fantastic persuading movement and the extraordinarily hair perfect detail makes it look realer than real(whatever that means).
Bagheera, the Black Panther, seems like a very realistic guardian and acts the same way. He admonishes Mowgli for using human tricks (Jugaad :P) and wants him to act more like an animal of the jungle than a human.
Favreau understands that the Mowgli-Baloo relationship is key to the story, and dedicates enough screen time to instill a"cool hangout" vibe in it. Whenever Baloo speaks, it is blissfully mellow and the Punjabi just adds to the fun.
The real coup is the Magesterial King Louie. Not an orangutan, but the last of the Gigantopithecus, just awaiting extinction, in a treasure trove of fruits and gold.
It is all deftly orchestrated by Favreau who manages to balance spectacle and emotion perfectly. The movie ends with a familiar picture straight out of the books with Mowgli, Bagheera and Baloo just chilling out on a tree.

Outrage: MHRD has gone bonkers
The most common argument being heard is that "IITians don't work for the amelioration of their country and will rather migrate abroad for jobs and research prospects." Well, there is no reason why I should do an MS in India where I'm not getting as advanced knowledge of a subject as I can get elsewhere and the government should be focusing more on developing higher education facilities in India rather than increasing cost of education.
And anyway, the fee hike is just going to worsen things. It is very difficult as it is for some people in IITs to pay for their education, but are managing somehow using education loans, because they have toiled for years to achieve that seat. Now people are just going to opt for private colleges. The relatively low fees of IITs were one of the few reasons why people opt for IITs over private institutions like BITS or VIT.
We have now reached a saturation point, where good quality students will actually look at other colleges for their education.
By increasing fees, the government solves none of the problem mentioned, rather it adds to them. So if I've taken an education loan to pay my fees then I would definitely be more inclined to go and work in some consultancy/abroad which pays me more so that I can pay off my debts.
People who will come to IITs will bet on a safer option of taking jobs, instead of innovating. We won't be able to see another Flipkart because that will be very risky, and already indebted students won't take those kind of risks.
Another excuse that is given is that, "governments abroad don't spend as much as is spent on IITians."That is untrue. Governments abroad spend 5.5% of their GDP on education while in India, only 4.9% is spent. And even if that was true, the quality of education in IITs is not even in the league of institutions abroad, so it makes no sense in making the student bear the expenses for that, since you are getting a workforce with a great skill set.

Crucible Chronicles
This time it was 36 cities. The quizmaster, Pickbrain(Giri Balasubramaniam) is probably the most prolific quizmaster in India and has conducted quizzes all across Asia. That guy is like a legend. The quiz was really enthralling. The finals ended up in a face-off between two colleges, three teams from my college i.e. IIT BHU and three teams from MNNIT Allahabad. The cut off was 16 with a tie breaker on 15.
The winners were IIT BHU(no surprises there) who have been winning this for six years running, runners up being one team from MNNIT Allahabad.
Just like always, I missed finals by one mark.
Fun Fact: The TATA Crucible Youtube videos have more views than Femina Miss India. People certainly have got their priorities right. :P
I am uploading a few questions asked in the quiz, as far as I can remember.

My philosophy on Religion
Before anything else, I must clearly convey that I am not an atheist and don't want to frustrate any religion in any way.
This blog post comes in the wake of the terror attack by IS in Brussels. The main rationale of these terror groups is to profess the Islamic religion and convert people from other religions to Islam.
Their ideology is flawed at its very basic level, leave out the violence and terror, all these insurgent groups are powered by their ideology that Islam/one religion is the only way in which one can achieve God.
Now let's commence with a history lesson and look at ancient religions meticulously, namely Vedic (Hinduism), Greek and Roman mythology, we see a consistency and pattern across all of them. There's Indra, the King of Gods, the Lord of the Sky and wielder of Lightning , Zeus/Jupiter, the King of Gods, the Lord of the Sky and wielder of Lightning. Also, people of all these religions are Sun worshipers and the Sun is considered to be a "God" whom we can see (Pratyakshadevata). Even the languages, i.e. Sanskrit and Greek language are very similar in text.
So, I believe that one religion was the origin of the other. We know that the Vedic texts are the most ancient religious texts in the world, so it was probably the Greek religion which sprang up from the Vedic religion. And it wasn't as if the Vedic religion sprang out of vacuum, it was created by men.
On the other hand, let's consider Christianity, Buddhism and Islam which I will refer to as neo-religions. These are relatively newer religions who have a prophet or a messiah who professes his ideology and his message to the people. The message given by these figures is always sound. They tell us to live a simple life, to be kind and to serve others, to love others and to not practice violence. Even in Hinduism there is Shirdi Sai Baba, Shankaracharya etc. We can say that the teachings of the neo-religions are the same as that of the ancient religions, except that these teachings were in context of the happenings of that era or that particular place/region.
These figures are definitely not a manifestation or an avatar of God himself. These are normal learned men who have figured out how to lead a happy contented life, and what better way to reach God, than leading such a life ? Unfortunately, human beings have a very terrible habit of portraying such figures as Gods and to start worshiping them instead of following their teachings. The marvels that the stories tell are nothing more than folk tales, so that the public would look at these figures with reverence.
What we can infer from the whole history lesson above, is that religion is something that was created by man. It wasn't created through magic, or through God's own will. All these ancient texts and books, are nothing but guides, written by learned men which teaches people how to lead a fulfilling life and attain ultimate salvation. Because, THERE IS ONLY ONE GOD.
It is as Swami Vivekananda said about Vedantic Philosophy, Religion is just a path invented by humans to achieve God, there can be many different paths for the same destination. And people should understand that tolerance is the ability to understand the same and to say that "You go your way, I'll go my way, we'll meet at the ultimate destination".We can even create our own path which confirms to the old teachings and is applicable in the modern context. But if we go on bickering about whose path is the best or the fastest, they'll just be stuck right there on the path fighting each other with blood soaked hands and deep wounds. Terrible happenings could have been avoided if people were conscious enough that they were going against all that their path stands for and "terrorism" would be all but non existent.

Movie Review - Batman vs Superman:Dawn of Justice
It's been nearly two years since Superman's (Henry Cavill) colossal battle with Zod (Michael Shannon) devastated the city of Metropolis. The loss of life and collateral damage left many feeling angry and helpless, including crime-fighting billionaire Bruce Wayne (Ben Affleck). Convinced that Superman is now a threat to humanity, Batman embarks on a personal vendetta to end his reign on Earth, while the conniving Lex Luthor (Jesse Eisenberg) launches his own crusade against the Man of Steel.
Director : Zack Snyder
Cast: Ben Affleck as Batman, Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman, Henry Cavill as Superman, Jesse Eisenberg as Lex Luthor, Amy Adams as Lois Lane
Lots of expectations. Didn't live up to them at all. Supposed to be first movie ever highlighting the rivalry between superheroes, but failed to capture my attention.
The difference observed between marvel and DC is that, marvel tends to make the movies a bit more fun, it increases the suspense, you find a few wisecracks. DC makes movies which are dark and really serious, and Zack Snyder crafted this movie to be exceedingly symbolic of Man vs God. I would have liked a few undercurrents of symbolism, but stating it directly in the script, that too multiple times, just ruined it for me.
The movie had a very accomplished star cast from whom a lot more was hoped especially Jesse Eisenberg and Henry Cavill.
Henry cavill does very less other than stand around looking chiseled, though we can't blame him. The movie uses Superman like a living statue.
Ben Affleck’s portrayal of Batman is one of the best I've ever seen, though the script doesn't do a lot of Justice to that fact. Affleck’s Batman is definitely ruthless, after years of fighting crimes we expect no less, but the script makes him look stupid and rash, leaving all the detective work to Lois Lane. Bruce Wayne just doesn’t seem to keep his cool charming persona that was expected from him and is easily swayed.
The only character who acted like a true hero in an act of selflessness and wisdom, was wonder woman. Both Batman and Superman were driven by revenge and rivalry, and some kind of selfish end, but wonder woman grabbed the spotlight in this movie. Definitely would love to see an individual movie featuring her.
Lex Luthor seems very itchy and jumpy and completely fails to convey any kind of malice. He comes across as a mad scientist rather than a genius billionaire criminal mastermind.
In the second half, the movie suddenly turns into a continuous action sequence, with two major fight sequences taking place back to back. The action and the CGI looked good and believable, as expected from Zack Snyder.
All in all, I think they tried to fit too many good plots into one movie which makes it very cluttered and incoherent.
My rating? 2.5/5
