QOTD 18/04/2016

Colombian student Hernando Barragán created the development platform Wiring as his Master's thesis project in 2004 at the Interaction Design Institute Ivrea in Ivrea, Italy. Massimo Banzi and Casey Reas (known for his work on Processing) were supervisors for his thesis. The goal was to create low cost, simple tools for non-engineers to create digital projects. The Wiring platform consisted of a hardware PCB with an ATmega128 microcontroller, an integrated development environment (IDE) based on Processing and library functions to easily program the microcontroller,

In 2005, Massimo Banzi, with David Mellis (then an IDII student) and David Cuartielles, added support for the cheaper ATmega8 microcontroller to Wiring. But instead of continuing the work on Wiring, they forked (or copied) the Wiring source code and started running it as a separate project, called X.

What is X ?

Movie Review : The Jungle Book

“The Jungle Book” is an all-new live-action epic adventure about Mowgli, a man-cub who’s been raised by a family of wolves. But Mowgli finds he is no longer welcome in the jungle when fearsome tiger Shere Khan, who bears the scars of Man, promises to eliminate what he sees as a threat. Urged to abandon the only home he’s ever known, Mowgli embarks on a captivating journey of self-discovery, guided by panther-turned-stern mentor Bagheera, and the free-spirited bear Baloo. Along the way, Mowgli encounters jungle creatures who don’t exactly have his best interests at heart, including Kaa, a python whose seductive voice and gaze hypnotizes the man-cub, and the smooth-talking King Louie, who tries to coerce Mowgli into giving up the secret to the elusive and deadly red flower: fire.

I recently went to watch "The Jungle Book". Since I live in Varanasi, and I am too lazy to go to the multiplex that shows English shows, I had to compromise with the Hindi dub. To anyone who wants to watch the movie, I really urge you to watch it in Hindi. Though the casting isn't very great, Punjabi Baloo makes up for it. :P

One Word : Astounding ! The visual effects are so immersive, that it almost beggars belief that the whole thing was shot in downtown LA. This was a sincere and heartfelt retreat to Rudyard Kipling's jungle book for fresh inspiration, keeping in attention the fact that this was being made as an adventure film for children, and is a perfect rendition of the two.

90's kids felt the nostalgia when "The 'Bear' Necessities" and "I wanna be like you" both made appearances. I remember watching the animated Disney film everyday during lunchtime.

The real star of the film (meaning no offence too the film's only human actor), is Shere Khan. The fantastic persuading movement and the extraordinarily hair perfect detail makes it look realer than real(whatever that means).

Bagheera, the Black Panther, seems like a very realistic guardian and acts the same way. He admonishes Mowgli for using human tricks (Jugaad :P) and wants him to act more like an animal of the jungle than a human.

Favreau understands that the Mowgli-Baloo relationship is key to the story, and dedicates enough screen time to instill a"cool hangout" vibe in it. Whenever Baloo speaks, it is blissfully mellow and the Punjabi just adds to the fun.

The real coup is the Magesterial King Louie. Not an orangutan, but the last of the Gigantopithecus, just awaiting extinction, in a treasure trove of fruits and gold.

It is all deftly orchestrated by Favreau who manages to balance spectacle and emotion perfectly. The movie ends with a familiar picture straight out of the books with Mowgli, Bagheera and Baloo just chilling out on a tree.

It was conceived in 1984 by architect and designer Richard Saul Wurman. The first conference, organized by Harry Marks and Wurman in the same year, featured demos of the Sony compact disc, and one of the first demonstrations of the Apple Macintosh computer. Presentations were given by famous mathematician Benoit Mandelbrot and influential members of the digerati community, like Nicholas Negroponte and Stewart Brand. The event was financially unsuccessful; it took six years before the second conference was organized. What am I talking about ?

Outrage: MHRD has gone bonkers

After months of prolonged speculation whether the government will or will not raise the fees in IITs, the beans have been spilled. 130% Hike ?! What are you thinking MHRD ? According to the high powered IIT committee it was more a question of "When" rather than "If", but for people who still didn't see it coming, it is a huge disappointment.

The most common argument being heard is that "IITians don't work for the amelioration of their country and will rather migrate abroad for jobs and research prospects." Well, there is no reason why I should do an MS in India where I'm not getting as advanced knowledge of a subject as I can get elsewhere and the government should be focusing more on developing higher education facilities in India rather than increasing cost of education.

And anyway, the fee hike is just going to worsen things. It is very difficult as it is for some people in IITs to pay for their education, but are managing somehow using education loans, because they have toiled for years to achieve that seat. Now people are just going to opt for private colleges. The relatively low fees of IITs were one of the few reasons why people opt for IITs over private institutions like BITS or VIT.

We have now reached a saturation point, where good quality students will actually look at other colleges for their education.

By increasing fees, the government solves none of the problem mentioned, rather it adds to them. So if I've taken an education loan to pay my fees then I would definitely be more inclined to go and work in some consultancy/abroad which pays me more so that I can pay off my debts.

People who will come to IITs will bet on a safer option of taking jobs, instead of innovating. We won't be able to see another Flipkart because that will be very risky, and already indebted students won't take those kind of risks.

Another excuse that is given is that, "governments abroad don't spend as much as is spent on IITians."That is untrue. Governments abroad spend 5.5% of their GDP on education while in India, only 4.9% is spent. And even if that was true, the quality of education in IITs is not even in the league of institutions abroad, so it makes no sense in making the student bear the expenses for that, since you are getting a workforce with a great skill set.

Things got really out of hand when it was announced that SC/STs are going to get full fee waiver. That's just horribly unfair to the other categories. I know some people who are SC/STs who own BMWs and some people of the general category who struggle to pay their fees. The fees of SC/STs is heavily subsidized as it is, and they also get multiple scholarships ranging from a few thousands to a few lakhs just based on their caste. Isn't this just the caste system thrown upside down ? Is it not discrimination against the General category students ?

All just for vote bank politics. This is why India has not been able to move forward for the past 1000 years. For the first 940 years, it was discrimination against the lower caste and for the next 60 years it has been discrimination against the general category.

What MHRD should have done is that, they should have categorized the fee structure according to the annual income of the student's family and subsidized their education and then ask them to pay later for it after they get a job, without charging any kind of interest.

Its kind of ironic how Smriti Irani is as/more unpopular than Kapil Sibal now.

Crucible Chronicles

TATA Crucible took place in my college a few days back. It is good to see TATA so zealous to organizing this quiz across the country. There is obviously something right with quizzing in general, because TATA could have spent all that money on advertising instead. But, it chose to invest all that into Crucible. So here we are.

This time it was 36 cities. The quizmaster, Pickbrain(Giri Balasubramaniam) is probably the most prolific quizmaster in India and has conducted quizzes all across Asia. That guy is like a legend. The quiz was really enthralling. The finals ended up in a face-off between two colleges, three teams from my college i.e. IIT BHU and three teams from MNNIT Allahabad. The cut off was 16 with a tie breaker on 15.

The winners were IIT BHU(no surprises there) who have been winning this for six years running, runners up being one team from MNNIT Allahabad.

Just like always, I missed finals by one mark.

Fun Fact: The TATA Crucible Youtube videos have more views than Femina Miss India. People certainly have got their priorities right. :P

I am uploading a few questions asked in the quiz, as far as I can remember.
